Generator servicing in Nigeria: what it costs in 2026 and how to keep the bill down

A minor generator service now costs about ₦15,000 to ₦40,000. Here is what drives the price, and why skipping it can cost more in fuel.

Published Nov 5, 2026

For millions of Nigerian homes, the generator is not a backup. It is the power supply. That makes servicing it one of the most predictable household bills of the year, and one of the easiest to let slide until something breaks.

Here is what generator servicing and common repairs cost in Nigeria in 2026, what pushes the price up, and how to keep the next bill smaller.

What it costs in 2026

  • Minor service (oil, spark plug, air filter, carburettor clean): typically ₦15,000 to ₦40,000.
  • Major service (adds valve adjustment, fuel system and electrical checks): about ₦40,000 to ₦100,000.
  • Oil change alone, including the oil: roughly ₦5,000 to ₦20,000, depending on engine size and oil grade.
  • Call-out and diagnosis in Lagos and Abuja: about ₦2,000 to ₦8,000, often deducted if you go ahead with the repair.
  • Spark plug for a small petrol set: around ₦800 to ₦2,500.
  • AVR (automatic voltage regulator) on a medium set: ₦15,000 to ₦60,000. A faulty AVR is a common reason a generator starts but gives no light.

These ranges come from published 2026 price guides (sources below). Prices vary by city, engine size and whether you choose genuine or copy parts.

What it means for your pocket

With petrol selling at roughly ₦1,100 to ₦1,500 per litre in 2026, the generator’s fuel bill is usually far bigger than its servicing bill. That is exactly why servicing matters: a clogged air filter, a worn plug or a dirty carburettor makes the engine work harder and burn more fuel for the same light. Skipping a ₦20,000 minor service can quietly cost more than that in extra fuel within weeks.

Small petrol sets are cheaper to service but need it more often, roughly every 100 running hours, which can mean every one to two months with daily use. Diesel generators cost more per service but go longer between them.

What changes the price

  • Engine size. Bigger sets need more oil, bigger filters and more labour.
  • Genuine or copy parts. Copy plugs and filters are cheaper but can fail quickly. Ask which you are getting before you pay.
  • Clear job or fault finding. An oil change can be priced upfront. A set that will not start, or starts with no output, needs diagnosis first.
  • Fuel quality. Bad petrol is a frequent cause of carburettor trouble.

What you can do

  • Change the oil on schedule, not when the set starts smoking.
  • If the generator sits unused, run it for a few minutes every week so the carburettor does not gum up.
  • Switch off heavy appliances before turning the generator off and on.
  • Ask the technician to note the date or running hours of each service, so you know when the next one is due.
  • Agree the price after the fault is found, not before, and avoid paying for parts in advance to someone you have never used.
